"SPN doesn't have a big digital platform, but if they have a partnership with Facebook or Google, all will benefit", a market analyst told Express.

This has left Star, Sony and Jio as the only bidders in fray for the five-year rights.

Altogether six companies had picked up the bid documents. Sony, on the other hand will be more desperate for the India Rights as Indian team's media rights are important for any broadcaster's survival.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday barred Steve Smith and David Warner from taking part in this year's Indian Premier League (IPL) after Cricket Australia banned the disgraced duo for their role in ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

The bidding opened on Tuesday at Rs 4176.00 crore, next bid received was at Rs 4201.20 crore, and Rs 4244.00 crore. As per the one BCCI official it can be roughly estimated that the per-match pay should be in the range of Rs 55-60 crore when the auction ends on Wednesday. The bidding started on April 3 and was carried forward to the next day when no successful outcome was reached on the first day of the e-auction. On the first day, the e-auction stopped at Rs 4442 crore.

The bidding process will be a marked departure from BCCI's conventional closed bid auction model (sealed envelope process). It is understood that firms such as Facebook, Google and YuppTV which had bought tender documents but did not submit their bids may have created consortiums with the primary bidders.

Ajit Singh will take charge of the office ahead of 2018 season of IPL and will be based out of BCCI headquarters at Cricket Centre, Mumbai, the BCCI announced on Saturday.

"It will be interesting how desperate Star will be now that they have acquired IPL media rights". Through the Ten Sports acquisition, it also has the rights to South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe. If Sony manages to bag the Indian cricket rights, they will pretty much have all global cricket in their kitty, except for ICC tournaments and series played in Bangladesh and New Zealand, which are still with Star.

Jio though could play the spoilsport for the two broadcasters. Recently, Rishtey Cineplex had broadcast the Nidahas Trophy 2018 in Hindi by partnering Discovery's DSport.
