Observers blame police budget cuts and rules that curtail stop-and-search, while the London police chief points the finger at social media for escalating disputes.

Until February, the murder rate in NY remained higher.

"At 13 my older brother was stabbed to death, and at 23 my younger brother was sentenced to 18 years for murder".

NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill said late past year that the declining crime figures in New York City can be attributed to "precision" policing against key offenders, initiatives that target gangs, and aggressive investigations into crimes committed with guns.

Her first tweet said: "My thoughts go out to Tanesha, the 17 year old who's lost her life last night".

And it is not just homicides that are blighting the British capital.

Over the past three years, London's murder rate has ballooned by nearly 40 pc, while figures show that New York's has dropped by nearly 87 pc since 1990.

All of which seems to belie Mayor Khan's contention that his city is "the safest global city in the world, and one of the safest cities in the world".

Figures published in January showed police recorded 37,443 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument in the year ending September 2017 - a 21% increase compared with the previous year and the highest tally since comparable records started in the 12 months to March 2011.

There were more murders in London than in NY in the last two months.

Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police commissioner, has told The Times that social media was driving young people to violence, as gang rivals "goad" each other online. While New York City also has strict gun laws, numerous murders there are shootings.

In comparison, the murder rate in NY has fallen by 87 percent, following the introduction of the zero-tolerance policy in the 1990s.

By a year ago, such offences across Britain had risen to 34,700.

The shootings come amid concerns over rising violent crime in the capital.

But some argue that punishment can only ever be one part of the solution.

"Over the past 24 hours we have had extra officers patrolling the streets, additional police cars on the road and specialist officers from our Operation Sceptre unit carrying out a range of intelligence led operations and patrols".
