A total of 257 people died in the crash, state TV reported.

A military plane, carrying 200 passengers onboard, crashed Wednesday in Boufarik, a town in Blida Province, Algeria.

The group is fighting for the independence of neighbouring Western Sahara, a territory also claimed by Morocco in a long-running dispute.

'There are more than 100 deaths. "We can't say exact how many at this point", Mohammed Achour, chief spokesman for the civil protection agency, told The Associated Press.

The North African country has suffered a string of military and civilian aviation disasters but Wednesday's was Algeria's deadliest ever plane crash and the world's fourth costliest in human lives in 20 years.

It is not known what caused the plane, a Russian-made Ilyushin, to come down, though the Defense Ministry said it is conducting an investigation.

The Ilyushin Il-76 is 153ft long - compared to a Boeign 737 which is just over 110ft - and is created to carry military cargo.

An Air Algerie flight crashed in northern Mali carrying 116 passengers and crew, almost half of them French, en route from Burkina Faso to Algeria in July 2014.

Footage from the scene showed thick smoke being emitted from the wreckage.

Earlier the news website TSA-Algerie cited a provisionary toll from civil protection of 105.

Algeria's defence ministry issued a statement expressing condolences to families of the victims, but did not give a death toll.

The Algerie Presse service agency said the Iliouchine-type plane was headed for Bechar in south-western Algeria.

Two military planes collided mid-flight in December 2012 during a training exercise in Tlemcen, in the far west of the country, killing the pilots of both planes.

Around 100 Algerian military personnel were on board an army plane that crashed on Wednesday near an airbase outside the capital, a military source told AFP.

There was one survivor from the accident, in which the C-130 crashed into a mountain amid bad weather conditions.
