Trump calls off his South America visit

Trump to skip South America summit to “oversee the American response to Syria”

That summit was expected to mark an important turning point in Trump's relationship with Latin American nations, but people close to him have said that he wasn't all that enthusiastic about the trip and is glad to have found a legitimate reason to call it off.

The planned South America trip was meant to see Trump attend the Summit of the Americas in Lima, the capital city of Peru.

The summit would have put Trump face-to-face with Central and South American officials he has sharply criticized over immigration into the United States.

"At the president's request, the vice-president will travel in his stead".

Trump vowed on Monday that the United States would take swift action in retaliation for the suspected chemical weapons attack on civilians in Syria on Saturday, amid hurried diplomacy that signalled allied military strikes may be imminent.

Sanders said Trump has made a decision to stay in the United States to "oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world".

It was the first direct USA military action against forces commanded by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syria and Russian Federation have denied there was a chemical weapons attack and have proposed global inspections. "This has to be seen in the context of a president who has been ranting and railing against Latin America continually for the last several years".

"I'm not very surprised (with Trump's absence) because the USA government really has no clear agenda for the region", he said.

The AFP news agency quoted French government spokesman Benjamin Griveaux as saying on Tuesday that "if a red line had been crossed, there will be a response", adding that intelligence shared by the French and U.S. leaders "in theory confirms the use of chemical weapons".
