Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stoppage time penalty to send Real Madrid into the semi-finals of the Champions League after 10-man Juventus had threatened to pull off one of the greatest ever comebacks with a 3-1 victory in the Bernabeu. "It's a shame it ends like this".

Ronaldo scored three of Madrid's four goals in the quarter-final tie, with a stunning double in the first leg setting the Blancos on their way to what appeared to be an easy progression.

Zidane declined to get involved in any debate over whether Michael Oliver's penalty decision had been correct or not while saying he had not been surprised that Ronaldo had kept his cool to convert.

But Ronaldo, in his 150th Champions League appearance, then netted his 120th goal in the competition by converting the penalty with a firm shot into the top corner.

Ronaldo - displaying nerves of steel - fired home the victor in dramatic fashion to score in his 11th consecutive Champions League match and sparked jubilant celebrations around the ground. It was a moment of confusion when he (Oliver) called it.

"I don't understand why they protested the penalty", Ronaldo said.

Madrid soon woke up and produced their best spell of the game as Isco, Varane and Ronaldo all went close while Giorgio Chiellini narrowly avoided scoring an own goal. And anyway the referee gave it, we can not change that.

Real have endured a poor season so far in La Liga, sitting fourth in the table and 15 points adrift of runaway leaders Barca, who capitulated on Tuesday night to go out of the Champions League. It was so almost the most remarkable comeback in recent memory from the Italians, however Real Madrid survived the scare and progressed winning 4-3 on aggregate. Consequently, Jesus Vallejo has been given the nod to partner Raphael Varane in the middle of the defence. Sami Khedira was played into space on the right and his clipped cross to the back post was headed home by Mandzukic. Again Mandzukic jumped higher than Dani Carvajal as he nodded between Navas' right hand and the near post.

The third goal came thanks to a 61st-minute mistake by Navas, who failed to hold on to a mid-height cross into the area and dropped the ball into Matuidi's feet in front of the goal. "I had two more substitutions planned for extra time and I was confident we could do it".
