Trump blasts Comey as details emerge from scathing book

"Instead, we are going to talk about Jim Comey", she said. Comey's book is already at number 11 on Amazon's bestsellers of 2018 - Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury, another Trump presidency-focused book, is now at number one.

James Comey has kicked off a publicity tour to promote his book, which is yielding headlines like this one from The Daily Beast this morning: "Trump "Pee Tape" Could Be Real, Says Ex FBI Director James Comey" (subhead: "In a stunning interview on "Good Morning America" the former director of the FBI said it was "possible" that the Russians had video of Trump taking part in a degrading sexual act").

"James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR", Trump wrote.

In his defence, Mr Comey acknowledged that he thought Mrs Clinton would win the presidency, adding that he was concerned that if he concealed the renewed investigation, it would make her an "illegitimate president". The book adheres closely to Comey's public testimony and written statements about his contacts with Trump and his own growing concern about Trump's integrity.

In attempt to blunt the impact of the new book, the Republican National Committee is waging a widespread campaign to undercut Comey's credibility, including a new website that dubs the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief as "Lyin' Comey".

On a grammatical note, it said, "Although Trump rendered the word as an open compound (slime ball) in his tweet, the traditional form is as a closed compound (slimeball)".

Mr Comey - a former attorney for the district of NY - was leading an FBI investigation into whether members of Mr Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to influence the 2016 election when he was sacked by Mr Trump.

Mr Comey accuses Mr Trump of being "untethered to truth" and details an unproven evening the United States leader spent with prostitutes in a Moscow hotel. Trump has denied any collusion.

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe was sacked last month, days before his retirement, following an internal review that accused him of being untruthful about his role in the leaking of damaging information on the Clinton email investigation.

Comey's book is scheduled to be released on April 17, but several news outlets have obtained a copy.

"He just rolled on, unprompted, explaining why it couldn't possibly be true, ending by saying he was thinking of asking me to investigate the allegation to prove it was a lie. I want you to know that nothing - nothing - has happened in the previous year to change my view".
