Voters may get chance to split Golden State into three

Proposal To Split California 3 Ways Gets Enough Signatures To Be Considered For November Ballot

Proposal To Split California 3 Ways Gets Enough Signatures To Be Considered For November Ballot

Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper says his petition to break up California into three states has garnered enough signatures for the initiative to be added to the ballot this November. "Partitioning California into three states would empower regional communities to make better, fairer and more sensible decisions for their citizens".

According to the proposal, first announced in November, this will solve California's most pressing issues, including the state's failing school systems, high taxes, deteriorating infrastructure and strained government. He said in a statement Thursday the signatures will be submitted to election officials next week.

Despite the vast number of signatures Draper says he's collected, a ballot initiative to split up California into three has its set of challenges. Draper noted it is almost twice as much support as the 365,880 required by state law to get the initiative on the ballot.

Others also have proposed various schemes to divide the state, such as a movement in more conservative far northern California for a State of Jefferson and a "Yes California" proposal by the state's liberals for a "Calexit" secession from the U.S.

CNN reached out to Secretary of State Alex Padilla, but he refused to comment until he receives the signatures. "After the measure is approved by voters, the governor will transfer notice of state approval to Congress, which will vote to ratify the creation of the new three-state structure".

Any thought to share on CAL 3?

A new California, the smallest in size, would consist of the current state's central coast and Los Angeles with a median income of 53,000 dollars. The three-way split goes like this: Northern California would include the Bay Area all the way to the OR border.

"There's very little support for tripling California's representation in the U.S. Senate", said Jack Pitney, who teaches politics at Claremont McKenna College.

Nevertheless opponents say creating three states will do nothing to resolve California's monetary and political points. Most recently, there was talk of splitting the state into two pieces.
