Ball-tampering scandal: CA sets up panel for culture review

The panel, which will conduct players review, will include former Test players Rick McCosker, Shane Watson and George Bailey, current players Pat Cummins and women's vice-captain Rachael Haynes.

CA have also appointed Dr Simon Longstaff, executive director of the Sydney-based Ethics Centre, to lead a separate independent review into the governing body.

Australia's wicket-keeper batsman Matthew Wade has reignited the debate over whether or not the Aussies should adopt the nice-guy approach in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal as he cautioned that Australians would lose its aggressive brand of cricket should they start playing like soft-centred New Zealand.

Most significantly, calls for a paradigm shift in Australian cricket were raised as Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned for a year by Cricket Australia and reprimanded for being involved in the "sandpaper gate".

The Ethics Centre was behind the recent investigation into the independent cultural review into the Australian Olympic Committee previous year.

"We understand and share the disappointment of fans and the broader Australian community about these events", said CA chairman David Peever. "The board is determined to do all we can to prevent such events from ever happening again".

The inquiries will begin immediately and CA maintains that the information gathering will remain confidential, whereas the findings will be made available after the completion. "I believe they all can", he said.

The player review will, CA says, "consider a behavioural charter for the Australian men's cricket teams that balances the performance demands of elite cricket with expectations of all Australians in regard to on and off-field role modelling".

Former players and pundits, however, have criticised the team for relentless sledging of opponents and other boorish conduct on field.

Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland says the door is not shut on disgraced opener David Warner to return to the national fold.

CA chief executive James Sutherland said while the infamous Cape Town Test, where the ball-tampering occurred, was "heartbreaking", that the incident presented a chance for Australian cricket to move forward.

"Absolutely, I think everyone deserves their chance and their own personal redemption story is very much in their own hands now", Sutherland was heard saying the on Melbourne radio station SEN. The left-hand cricketer was banned from taking the leadership role in Australian cricket following the investigation, but Sutherland believes that he showed signs of good leadership when he was given the opportunity.
