Rangers dismiss Murty, paving the way for Steven Gerrard

The gap between Rangers and Glasgow rivals Celtic looked as big as ever last weekend when the Hoops hammered them 5-0 to seal a seventh consecutive Scottish Premiership title while off the pitch the club still owes over £15 million in loans and recorded a £6.7 million net loss in their latest accounts.

The 'Gers sacked Graeme Murty today, leaving Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson to take charge of their final three Scottish Premiership games of the season.

They say sources close to Gerrard have told them that he is viewing a potential stint at Rangers as the flawless stepping stone to one day succeeding Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The 37-year-old Gerrard has been coaching Liverpool's development squad after retiring from playing in 2016 and has said he wishes to become a manager.

Asked about the possibility of taking the job, Gerrard told BT Sport: "There's truth in the rumours".

The 37-year-old's only previous coaching experience has come at Liverpool, where he has spent almost a year managing the Under-18s side.

At the moment, they are three points adrift of the Pittodrie team and level on 65 with a better goal difference over the Edinburgh side.

There may be some doubts about the ability of Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard to transition into senior management.

In December, the 43-year-old had been given the job until the end of the season after a spell in interim charge following Pedro Caixinha's sacking.

Gerrard is reportedly closing in on his first managerial job at SPL giants Rangers.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Lampard said: "In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him".
