Sir Alex Ferguson undergoes emergency surgery for brain haemorrhage

Well-wishes immediately flooded in after his former club, where he spent more than 26 years in charge, announced the news in a brief statement on Saturday evening.

He remained a regular visitor to Old Trafford and was there last Sunday to make a presentation to old rival Arsene Wenger on the Arsenal manager's last appearance at the ground before he leaves the London club.

Premier League Football Club Everton manger Sam Allardyce and Southampton manager Mark Hughes wished Alex.

Those who played under Sir Alex, including David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Peter Schmeichel, also posted to social media in support of their former boss, along with stars of the current team, such as Jesse Lingard and Romelu Lukaku.

Man City full-back Benjamin Mendy was quick to send his thoughts to Sir Alex, taking to his Twitter to write: "So sad. Thoughts are with the family and close ones". "My thoughts and prayers are with you, my dear friend".

Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, signed by Ferguson as an 18-year-old in 2003, tweeted a picture with his former mentor.

David Beckham led the way, posting a message on instagram saying 'Keep fighting Boss.

"Obviously, I knew it was extremely serious when I knew his son Darren didn't attend his own game at Doncaster today", the former England boss added.

He added: "I am going to find out how he is as soon as I possibly can..." I was hoping it wasn't true. "I hope he has a full recovery".

He managed Scotland in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico following the death of Jock Stein and became Manchester United manager later that year.

Success did not come immediately, and football folklore has it that Ferguson was almost shown the door himself before an FA Cup triumph in 1990 paved the way for an unprecedented two decades of glory.

He also won five FA Cups and four league cups before leaving the club in 2013.

"A great rival but also a great friend who supported this club during its most hard time, it is hoped that Sir Alex will make a full recovery".

"The thoughts of everyone at Liverpool Football Club are with Sir Alex Ferguson and his family following the news that the former Manchester United manager is ill in hospital", they said.

"Gutted to hear the news tonight about Sir Alex", tweeted United defender Ashley Young.

Ferguson's family have requested privacy as he recovers in Salford Royal Hospital. "Wish him all the very best".
