US Navy veteran who killed Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhotla sentenced to life

Kuchibhotla's friend, Alok Madasani, and Ian Grillot, a bar-goer who tried to intervene in the attack, were also shot, but survived.

Kuchibhotla grew up in Hyderabad and thereafter went to the USA to pursue engineering at the University of Texas.Kuchibhotla worked as an aviation systems engineer and programs manager.

While Srinivas died after he was taken to a hospital, his friend Alok Madasani was injured and recovered later. Mr Madasani later said the two met regularly at Austin's Bar and Grill.

The Indian techie was shot dead on February 22, 2017 in Kansas in an alleged racial attack, after Adam Purinton was heard shouting "get out of my country".

The hate crime had garnered a lot of attention from the media and the Indian American community. He later addressed it in a speech to Congress. Post this tragic incident a lot of people mourned his death and marched through the Kansas City.

The man who pleaded guilty of walking into an Olathe bar and murdering an Indian national in 2017 was sentenced on Friday.

Dumala was not sure she would be able to return to the United States, in part because her immigration status depended on her husband's. I would like to thank the district attorney's office and the Olathe police department for the efforts in bringing a closure to the case and bringing this man to justice.

"I returned for all the love that flowed around me after this bad tragedy". I don't want another Sunayana to go through losing their loved ones. "I returned because America is my home now". "Today's sentencing in the murder of my husband will not bring back Srinu to me but will bring back a strong message that hate is not acceptable", she said.

She planned to attend a memorial walk in Kuchibhotla's honor on Friday, which would have been his 34th birthday.

"Neither me or my family never wanted a death penalty, because we did not believe in taking a life for life", Dumala said in an email to Hindustan Times on Saturday to a question on whether she would have wanted the death penalty for Srinivas Kuchibhotla's killer. "Let us continue to work for peace, understanding and love - the things Srinu stood for and will be his legacy".
