US President Thanks Singapore for Hosting US-N.Korea Talks

He added that the prisoners' release showed relations between the U.S. and North Korea were on a "new footing".

Singapore is gearing up to host the highly-anticipated summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "We are going to make a great deal, for the world, for North Korea, for South Korea, for Japan, for China", he added.

The tweeted announcement capped weeks of negotiations that began when Trump announced March 8 he had accepted Kim's invitation as delivered by South Korea government officials. "Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!"

The recent warming relationship between the North Korean leader and Trump has started chatter of a possible Nobel Peace Prize.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo traveled to Pyongyang Tuesday to fine-tune the details of the summit.

The visit saw the release of three Americans who had been jailed in North Korea - with the White House describing it as a "gesture of good will" ahead of the summit.

The former real estate mogul said succeeding to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula will be his "proudest achievement". Mr. Trump sounded optimistic about his upcoming summit during a rally in IN on Thursday.

In an editorial in the state propaganda outlet Rodong Sinmun, the author accused the US of "playing down the historic significance of the inter-Korean summit at Panmunjom" between Kim Jong-un and South Korean leader Moon Jae-in by claiming it is the result of tough economic sanctions imposed on the regime over the past year.

The flurry of diplomacy set in this year after Kim reached out to the South over his country's participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in February. Jean Lee, director for the Korea Foundation Center at the Wilson Center, a Washington-based think tank, recently told the South Korean newspaper Dong-A Ilbo: "North Koreans do not believe at all that their leader would give up nuclear weapons".

Trump's decision Tuesday to withdraw the US from the Obama-era Iran nuclear deal served as a precursor for his plan to approach the North Korean summit, national security adviser John Bolton said Tuesday on "The Ingraham Angle".

Last month the Korean leaders held their own historic meeting inside the Demilitarized Zone dividing the two sides. Therefore, she said, any change in the size of the USA forces in the South Korea should not be on the table at the summit.

"We are starting off on a new footing - I really think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful".

Phillips said that if Obama had achieved denuclearization, "they would have already renamed the prize the 'Obama Peace Prize'".
