Boston Dynamics Has Made That 'Black Mirror' Robot Chase Scene A Reality

In a recent video released by Boston Dynamics, Atlas, the world's most dynamic humanoid is seen ambling across a patchy outdoor terrain showcasing his ability to maintain balance while walking at a brisk pace.

The company's founder, Marc Raibert, announced at a TechCrunch event last Friday in California that the dog-like robot, which will be able to perform office and household tasks, will be commercially available in 2019. It has scared some people though, as Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker specifically based the killer robots from the black and white episode "Metalhead" on SpotMini.

SpotMini gets around with the help of cameras on its front, sides and one mounted on its rear - a position that Raibert calls the "butt-cam".

In addition to the video of Atlas, Boston Dynamics also put out this clip of SpotMini, its robot dog with five times the utility and none of the cuddiliness.

Boston Dynamics was bought from Google's parent company, Alphabet, by Japanese firm SoftBank in August a year ago, but it looks as though developments are surging ahead. It's unclear who will be able to buy them and for how much.

Given a shout-out by Amazon chief Jeff Bezos early this year when he posted a picture of himself striding alongside a canine cyborg, SpotMini is small four-legged nimble robot that can handle objects, climb stairs and operate in an office setting.

In the first SpotMini video from 2016, we're shown the original robot performing various chores around the house, including loading up the dishwasher and throwing away trash. "We're also looking at construction".

Boston Dynamics has been set up back in 1992.

Boston Dynamics has been developing a range of robots, each with their own skills.

Updated on May 13: The SpotMini will go on sale in 2019.
