Flying Lava Bombs From Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano Could Spark Mass Evacuation

A 20th fissure releasing lava and gases has opened on Kilauea's side, state officials said on Tuesday.

The gas is especially harmful for elderly, young children and babies and people with respiratory problems, and may cause choking, the agency officials said Monday. "This is a serious situation that affects the entire exposed population".

No deaths or major injuries have been reported, but officials have ordered about 2,000 residents to evacuate the area.

Since the Kilauea volcano erupted, there hasn't been much of a break for residents of the southeast portion of the Big Island, who've been grappling with evacuations, lava and sulfur dioxide.

Almost 20 fissures have opened since the Kilauea volcano started erupting 12 days ago and officials warn it could soon blow its top with a massive steam eruption that would shoot boulders and ash into the sky.

"There's a lot of worst-case scenarios and roads getting blocked is one of them", said Hickman, standing on Highway 137, in the potential path of the lava flow, some three kilometres away. "The molten rock was such a deep vibrant orange that it looked technically altered".

The Hawaii State Department of Health is asking the general public to avoid any area with fissures because the gases emitted require special cartridge respirators.

"So far those explosions have not occurred and I think the key here is that the vent system is an open one, therefore pressure is not being built or developed down at the top of the lava column", Brantley told a conference call. The number of structures destroyed is at least 37. and counting.

In addition to the threat of gas and fissures, there are concerns about what's known as phreatic eruptions. The intense heat may cause water to boil and result in eruptions.

Scientists had expected such explosions by the middle of this month as Kilauea's lava lake fell below the water table. Officials fear the unpredictability of the volcano, and how long the eruption will last is unclear. And it could send ash plumes as far as 12 miles from the summit crater, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said.

The National Weather Service warned residents of "light ashfall" throughout the day in Kau, the island's southernmost district, after a burst of volcanic emissions at about 9am on Monday.

Janet Babb, Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologist, said the type of explosions, are "notoriously hard to forecast and can occur with little or no warning".
