Yemeni PM says row over Socotra resolved

Saudi air defences on Tuesday intercepted a ballistic missile fired into the south of the kingdom from Huthi rebel-held territory in neighbouring Yemen, said a spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition.

Arab coalition spokesman Colonel Turki al-Maliki said that the missile was sacked from the region of Saada towards populated areas in Jizan.

Turki al-Malki, a spokesman for a Saudi-led coalition cobbled together in 2015 to fight the Houthis, condemned the attack, which he said had targeted a civilian area "in clear violation of worldwide law".

The conflict escalated in 2015 when Saudi Arabia and its Sunni-Arab allies launched a wide-ranging military campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi gains in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia last week tested a new siren system for the capital Riyadh and the oil-rich Eastern Province, a testament to the increased challenge posed by the rebels' armaments.

He said that if Iran wants regional security, it should meet basic requirements, like "the completion of the nuclear file in terms of inspection, not providing terrorists with ballistic missiles, respecting UN Security Council resolutions and non-interference in neighbouring countries".

The announcement came a day after Saudi troops were deployed to the strategic island following tensions between Yemen's internationally recognised government and the UAE, a key member of the coalition.

Socotra had been spared involvement in the Yemeni conflict, which has claimed almost 10,000 lives since March 2015 and triggered what the United Nations has called the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
