Arsenal earmark Spaniard as their number one choice for new manager

The Daily Mail is reporting that Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has picked Arteta as the leading candidate to become the north London club's new boss after Wenger ended his 22-year reign at The Emirates this summer.

That's according to Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol, who claims the current New York City boss sees the offer as a "token gesture".

Arsenal are reportedly hoping to speed up the appointment of Mikel Arteta as Arsene Wenger's successor due to seeing a number of other candidates drop out of the running. Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has become increasingly convinced that the Spaniard, now Pep Guardiola's assistant coach at Manchester City, is the right man for the job.

Sky add that Thierry Henry has "not been contacted" by the club, while Luis Enrique's wage demands continue to make his appointment unlikely. The club's director of football Alexander Rosen has told the German media that "Nagelsmann will be our coach next season, 100%".

According to the UK Independent, Arteta and his representatives have held advanced negotiations with the Gunners and are at a stage where backroom staff and financial packages are being discussed.

Along with Arteta, Patrick Vieira has been spoken to about the Arsenal post, but the Frenchman has since been left in limbo as he has not received any feedback.

The Telegraph says that Arsenal are in talks to sign the 21-year-old "and are believed to be prepared to agree a deal worth up to £35m".
