Facebook Has Removed Half A Billion Fake Accounts So Far This Year

"My top priorities this year are keeping people safe and developing new ways for our community to participate in governance and holding us accountable", said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a post on his profile Tuesday. The company will break down its enforcement efforts in a new report which will be published quarterly.

It also explains some of the reasons, usually external, or because of advances in the technology used to detect objectionable content, for large swings in the amount of violations found between Q4 and Q1.

In the United Kingdom, Facebook this week again resisted a request from British lawmakers to testify as part of their investigation into Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy that improperly accessed personal information about 87 million of the social site's users.

The platform also revealed how much content its automated systems were picking up and how much was reported by users.

Nearly 86 percent was found by the firm's technology before it was reported by users.

The company has a policy of removing content that glorifies the suffering of others. The statistics cover a relatively short period, from October 2017 through March of this year, and don't disclose how long, on average, it takes Facebook to remove material violating its standards.

During the press call, Schultz noted it will be a mix of full-timers and contractors spread across 16 locations around the world.

Mr Rosen said making the figures public will "push" the company to improve more quickly.

For graphic violence, the company took down or applied warning labels to about 3.5 million pieces, 86 percent of which was identified by technology before it was reported. The content audited included graphic violence, hate speech, adult nudity and sexual activity, spam, terrorist propaganda (IS, al-Qaeda and affiliates) and fake accounts. AI did, however, flag 99.5pc of terrorist content on Facebook and 95.8pc of posts containing nudity.

However, it declined to say how many minors - legal users who are between the ages of 13 and 17 - saw the offending content.

All told, Facebook took action on almost 1.6 billion pieces of content during the six months ending in March, a tiny fraction of all the activity on its social network, according to the company.

Only 38 percent of these were flagged by automation, which fails to interpret nuances like counter speech, self-referential comments or sarcasm. The percentage was consistent in the first quarter of 2018 with a total 583 million accounts.

"These kinds of metrics can help our teams understand what's actually happening to 2-plus billion people", he said.

Facebook also prohibits hate speech and said it took action against 2.5 million pieces of content in the first quarter, up 56 percent from the quarter earlier.

But most of Facebook's removal efforts centered on spam and fake accounts promoting it.
