In a solemn ceremony of the opening of the bridge was attended by the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Ukraine has publicly shown their dissatisfaction and disapproval in the scenario, stating that the construction of this bridge showed blatant disregard for worldwide law; the new intrusion in the waterway was also going to harm the ships and other water traffic by disrupting their route through the Black Sea.

"The European Union continues to condemn the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol by Russian Federation and will not recognize this violation of global law", the European Union stressed.

The Ukrainian government reacted to the opening with anger.

According to the official statement of the state Department, the construction of the bridge is a violation of worldwide law by Russian Federation.

British Foreign Office minister Alan Duncan said it was "a further example of Russia's reckless behaviour".

The construction of the Kerch bridge illegally, and Russia's attempts to legitimize the temporary occupation of the Crimean Peninsula - in vain.

The Crimean bridge stands nearly complete.

A parallel bridge for rail transport should be ready by December 2019, the Russian authorities stressed.

Ukraine President Petro Poroshenko said on social media that the illegal construction of the bridge is the latest evidence of the Kremlin's disregard for global law.

European Union and USA sanctions have targeted those involved in building the bridge, principally Putin's close ally, businessman Arkady Rotenberg, whose company Stroygazmontazh won the construction contract.

After Russia's annexation of Crimea in March 2014, the peninsula found itself between a rock and a hard place.

The construction of the bridge's railway section continues. A connecting highway from Kerch to the regional capital of Simferopol is set for completion in 2020.
