An emotional return Stephen Piscotty homers in first at-bat back with the A’s

Piscotty, batting eighth, hit a home run Tuesday night in his first at-bat since his mother's funeral.

It was Piscotty's first at-bat since returning from the bereavement list.

"It was pure joy", Piscotty said of the moment that followed the.

He patted his heart and then looked skyward as he touched home plate for a quiet tribute to his mom, Gretchen, who had battled ALS.

"Running around [the bases] was pretty emotional".

A's manager Bob Melvin described how special Piscotty's home run was for the team. I'm pretty cried out, so I didn't tear up or anything. The A's gave him the option of sitting out after he took a red-eye flight from California, but Piscotty wanted to play. Because of the three-hour time difference, Piscotty said he didn't feel that exhausted. "Probably Gretchen ... It was like a walkoff".
