He said there's a simple, logical reason why some folks who listen to the viral recording hear "yanny" while others pick up "laurel".

First, it was over the black and blue or white and gold dress (#TeamBlackandBlue, ) and now it's over an audio clip of a voice saying "Yanny" or "Laurel".

Watch as Ghastly and Boombox Cartel chime in with their thoughts on the Yanny or Laurel fiasco.

"I asked my friends in my class and we all heard mixed things", Hetzel told Wired.

There's a debate dominating the Internet right now about how people hear a recorded sound. It's like it was put on the internet just to sow discord. Audiologist Catherine Marino said because they're grouped so close together, it's up to the brain to decide which one to hear. As the bass is adjusted, the word seems to shift. Jake Cavanaugh, says what you hear depends on a few different factors. Mediocre speakers don't usually play both quality bass and treble.

There are a lot of theories out there ranging from the volume the clip is played in to what type of speakers you may be using.

The answer to why people hear it differently may come down to their brains.

"You have categories of sounds in your head", he said.

The debate even made its way to Washington D.C.

John Houde, who runs the speech neuroscience lab at UCSF where Kothare works, said that the either-or prompt of yanny or laurel is a classic example of what's known as a forced-choice experiment.

"When I analyzed the recording of Laurel, that third resonance is very high for the L. It drops for the R and then it rises again for the L", he said.
