There is no such hope for Payet, however, as he sustained a muscle injury in Olympique de Marseille's 3-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Other high-profile omissions such as Manchester United forward Anthony Martial and Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette have been axed on grounds of form but, in Payet's case, Deschamps confirmed a newly acquired hamstring injury counted as too much of a risk.

France open their World Cup campaign against Australia on June 16, before facing Peru and Denmark in their remaining Group C fixtures.

Australia's most hard opponent at the upcoming World Cup, France, has named a provisional 23-man squad with several big names missing, but plenty of quality to challenge the Socceroos.

France's 23 man squad for Russian Federation includes Giroud, who moved to Chelsea in January after being warned his World Cup place was in doubt if he remained on the Gunners' bench.

Martial will have to settle for a place in Deschamps' reserve list, along with Arsenal's Alexandre Lacazette and Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman.

Griezmann scored a brace in the Europa League final, and was unsurprisingly chosen for his favorable performance alongside with his striking partner Olivier Giroud. The 29-year-old Nzonzi has just two caps.

"Players have repaid my faith and I put the group above everything", Deschamps said.

Other unlucky players included midfielders Andre Gomes and Renato Sanches, forward Nani and defender Eliseu.

Although Mbappe has largely played off the left wing for PSG this season, and Fekir plays a deeper more central attacking midfield role for Lyon, Deschamps is of the belief that both are more capable options as strikers than Lacazette or Martial.

Back on defensive line, left-back Benjamin Mendy was called up although he featured in few games for Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
