Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was the focus of the popular Serial podcast, will be profiled in a forthcoming four-part investigative docuseries from HBO Documentary Films and European network Sky.

According to an HBO news release, the series has been in production since 2015 and will feature new discoveries as well as "groundbreaking revelations that challenge the state's case". Syed, Lee's boyfriend, was arrested and ultimately convicted of charges including kidnapping and first-degree murder.

Serial Season 1 told Adnan Syed's story and the curious, potentially unfair trial he received.

The podcast Serial was inspired by a documentary reality series about a mysterious death, and now the crime covered in Serial is becoming a documentary reality series.

As is standard with these things, prosecutors are now expected to challenge the decision.

Syed was granted a retrial in 2016 but the retrial is still to take place.

Syed's original trial lawyer from 2000 has passed away since his conviction, but Syed's current lawyer, Justin Brown, credited "Serial" with helping him and his team to locate McClain.

Adnan, who is now in his late 30s, found himself back in the headlines in March, having been granted a new trial.

What happens next depends on how the Maryland Court of Appeals responds to the prosecution.
