An American citizen working at the US consulate in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has reported suffering from "abnormal" sounds and pressure leading to a mild brain injury, the USA embassy said on Wednesday.

"We do not now know what caused the reported symptoms and we are not aware of any similar situations in China, either inside or outside of the diplomatic community", the State Department warned in a health alert.

The State Department was taking the incident very seriously and working to determine the cause and impact, the embassy said.

In Cuba, the American victims had associated the onset of their symptoms with "unusual sounds or auditory sensations", a State Department physician told the US Senate in January.

The embassy spokesperson told CBS News that the Chinese government had "assured us they are also investigating and taking appropriate measures".

A U.S. government employee in southern China has reported abnormal sensations of sound and pressure, the State Department said, recalling similar experiences among American diplomats in Cuba who later fell ill.

It advised anyone who experiences "unusual acute auditory or sensory phenomena accompanied by unusual sounds or piercing noises" to not seek out the source, but instead to move to a location where they are not present.

China's Foreign Ministry and National Health Commission did not immediately respond to faxed questions about the report.

The health alert advised that US citizens in China should consult a medical professional if they experience any symptoms.

The Canadian government in April said it would remove families of diplomats posted to Cuba after Canadian personnel there in 2017 also reported similar health symptoms.

Charles Rosenfarb, a doctor and director of the State Department bureau of medical services, said the symptoms were mixed but consistent with brain trauma. Officials believe some type of sonic weapon may have been used.

More than 20 members of staff in Havana were harmed in the "health attacks", according to the state department.

At the time Rex Tillerson, the former US State Secretary of State, said the symptoms resulted from "targeted attacks" but he did not specify who may have been behind them.

The Post reports that Chinese and U.S. officials are looking into the matter.
