"That's it", Freidman said in the statement, sent to and read on the show by New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

A Ukrainian lawmaker loyal to Poroshenko then drew on personal contacts with the Port of Washington Chabad, which is a Jewish charity in NY, and this, the BBC reports, led them to Cohen, who received hundreds of thousands of dollars.

It's the first time we've heard of payments to Cohen that resulted in action by the White House.

The FBI raided Mr Cohen's home, office and hotel room in NY on April 9.

Tuesday's announcement, and a demand that the matter be brought to the House floor for a vote, comes as House Republicans accuse the Federal Bureau of Investigation of planting "at least one person into the Trump campaign" to spy on its activities, said Representative Lee Zeldin who is a member of the Freedom Caucus and the resolution's author.

Freidman has for years managed a number of taxi medallions for Cohen in New York City and Chicago, and the pair have been friends since the 1990s.

By 2003, Cohen owned a fleet of 200 taxi cabs, working in partnership with a Ukrainian immigrant named Simon Garber.

In 2006, Cohen went to work for the Trump Organization as a lawyer and executive vice president.

In mid-April the New York Post reported that Cohen once rented Ivanka and Jared Kushners Park Avenue apartment to the Taxi King.

Freidman struggled financially as the value of taxi medallions plummeted.

The New York State Attorney General's Office said in a press release that Freidman had pleaded guilty to a criminal charge on Tuesday in an Albany, New York, courtroom, but it made no mention of whether he was cooperating with prosecutors. During Ramadan, to help his Muslim drivers "feel great" when breaking fast, Freidman says he provided them with "Subway sandwiches with vegetable [s], tuna, cheese, and chips". Instead, he filed false tax returns created to hide the theft, they said. During that period of time, he was operating taxis controlled by Cohen, according to people familiar with their relationship.

"The Attorney General's office agrees that if the defendant fulfills these conditions, and taking into account all other factors known to the AG at the time of sentencing, we would recommend that he would receive a sentence of 5 years' probation".

Word of the Freidman agreement came just days after news broke that Jeffrey Yohai, the son-in-law of former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort, had reached a plea agreement.
