40,000 pounds of chicken feathers were the cause of major backups in Washington Wednesday morning after the truck driver fell says he fell asleep and crashed, spilling the cargo across the interstate. As much as 40,000 pounds of feathers spilled onto the roadway.

The accident happened on Wednesday, May 23rd at approximately 3:20 a.m.in Federal Way, Washington.

Johnson said that in similar cases drivers have been cited for second-degree negligent driving and fined $550.

The feathers have been reportedly being transported from Foster Farms.

"Fowl option to begin the day", one Twitter consumer replied.

"I would say good cluck cleaning that all up, but I can see that you scrambled to take care of it already", another joked.

It added, "With ~ 8,000 feathers on a chicken that's nearly 2,300 chickens worth of feathers".

All lanes of northbound I-5 were closed for hours while crews worked to clean up the mess of feathers.

Tacoma-based News Tribune newspaper reported traffic being backed-up for 11 miles (18 kilometers) as crews scooped up the feathers, which were strewn across the road, metal barrier and central reservation area. All lanes reopened around 7:30 a.m.
