Kim Kye Gwan said North Korea's recent criticisms of certain USA officials had been a reaction to unbridled American rhetoric, and that the current antagonism showed "the urgent necessity" for the summit.

He said that the North Korean leader has made all-out efforts to prepare for the summit with the US, saying his meeting with Trump will serve as a good start. North Korea sends hundreds of people to the games in February, including Kim's sister, who conveys her brother's desire for a summit with Moon.

The next morning, Mr Trump reveals the date and location of his "highly-anticipated meeting" with Kim, vowing to "make it a very special moment for World Peace!"

Dozens of global journalists attended the spectacular dismantling of the nuclear site, although North Korean leader Kim Jong-un chose not to allow any independent experts to attend.

Although he attributed his decision to the "tremendous anger and open hostility" in North Korean official statements, the more likely explanation for the about-face was that it had become increasingly apparent that the summit would fail, given that North Korea would not agree to completely dismantle its nuclear arsenal and capabilities.

Following years of tensions, South Korea's hosting of the Winter Olympics in February 2018 gives the neighbors a window to reopen communications, ushering in a spectacular Korean detente. Moon says the "fate and the future of the Korean Peninsula hinge" on the meeting in Singapore.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the "disappointed" that the talks have been called off, according to CNN.

"Democrats are so obviously rooting against us in our negotiations with North Korea", he said, also accusing Democrats of supporting "MS-13 thugs", and wanting to raise taxes.
