Inside North Korea's nuclear test site demolition show

Washington DC. Trump has called off the highly anticipated U.S.-North Korea summit scheduled to take place

Trump reacted by criticizing his predecessors for allowing this perceived threat to develop; aiming tough (and at times insulting) talk at North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un, while also expressing a willingness to meet with him directly; and organizing a successful push for United Nations-backed sanctions created to bring North Korea either to the negotiating table or to its knees.

"I think President Trump did exactly the right thing in canceling the meeting", Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, said in a Thursday interview on Fox News.

The statement from Pyongyang appeared created to get the summit back on track after Trump canceled their planned Singapore meeting, citing "tremendous anger and open hostility" in recent statements from North Korea.

But Kim's tone changed again after Trump's latest move.

Moon had meticulously brokered the summit between Trump and Kim and claimed the "driver's seat" in trying to resolve the nuclear standoff, but said Trump's cancellation left him "very perplexed".

Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan called Trump's withdrawal "unexpected" and "very regrettable", and said the cancellation of the talks showed "how grave the status of historically deep-rooted hostile North Korea-U.S. relations is and how urgently a summit should be realized to improve ties".

"I know the president is (optimistic) as well", he said. It will be hard for Moon to continue engagement with Pyongyang at the cost of widening a rift with Washington.

"I think Kim may have miscalculated", said Bruce Bechtol, a professor of political science at Angelo State University who has authored several books on North Korea.

North Korea's grand gesture to dismantle its nuclear site is now a metaphor for the fate of the Trump-Kim summit. The U.S. announcement came not long after Kim appeared to make good on his promise to demolish his country's nuclear test site.

"I think it is worth positively evaluating North Korea showing its willingness to continue the talks with the USA, while calmly assessing the current situation", said Kim Yong-hyun, a professor of North Korean studies at Dongguk University in Seoul.

But Trump also threw Moon under the metaphorical bus.

In a personal letter to Kim, Trump announced Thursday he would not go ahead with the June 12 summit in Singapore, following what the White House called a "trail of broken promises" by the North.

But North Korea's measured reaction to Trump's rejection letter also offered the opportunity for the summit to be held in the future, raising hope that diplomatic progress is still possible.

Ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun said: "There have been no changes in the stance of related parties in that the problem should be solved through dialogue".

Present in North Korea's response was a sense of looking back in regret. Trump has seemed to welcome chatter of a Nobel Peace Prize, but that had yielded in recent weeks to the sobering prospect of ensuring a successful outcome with the Kim. -South Korean military drills.

Both Pence and Trump's hawkish National Security Advisor John Bolton had raised the spectre of Libyan leader Moamer Khadafi, who gave up atomic weapons only to die years later at the hands of US-backed rebels.

"To achieve the North's denuclearization and solve the abduction issues, Japan will closely work with the United States", he said.

Moon and Kim's vague pledge for the "complete denuclearization" of their peninsula after last month's inter-Korean summit has done little to quiet questions over Kim's true intent.

The mother of twin boys fled North Korea in 2006.

Another user said: "No-one will now believe you, Trump".

Trump had initially sought to placate North Korea, saying he was not pursuing the "Libya model" in getting the North to abandon its nuclear weapons program. "South Korea has to be more active as a mediator to reduce the distrust between both sides".
