Lava from Hawaii volcano enters ocean from 3 flows

Low lava fountains were erupting from a almost continuous two-mile (3.22km) portion of the series of fissures that have opened up in the ground, scientists said.

The fountains were feeding lava flows in channels down to the coast. Even the smoke rising from the lava appears to take on a red tinge as it plumes into the sky.

PGV is the Puna Geothermal Venture. That steam is then directed into a turbine generator that produces electricity, according to Hawaiian Electric. Lava entering the ocean was also creating high levels of gas, Hawaii Civil Defense said.

"Fissure 7 is producing the most volume of lava".

It knocked him backward on the third-floor lanai of his neighbor's home on the eastern end of the Big Island, where most people had evacuated amid three weeks of heightened volcanic activity on Kilauea.

The lava is also beginning to explode as it hits the sea, sending cooled, hardened lava rocks flying out to sea posing a threat to boaters.

"If you turn to the right, that was the edge of Leilani Estates", Hickman continued, "there's a couple streets that came off of it, all gone". The volcano has been in almost continuous eruption since 1983. The fissure complex is visible in the upper center of the image.

Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, entered the fourth week of what may be an unprecedented, simultaneous eruption at its summit crater and along a 9.7-kilometre string of fissures 40km down its east flank. Its latest behavior is just an escalation of the eruption. Of those, about 4 percent - 2,000 residents - have been forced to evacuate. The nearby Gemini Observatory in Hilo, Hawaii, captured a time-lapse glimpse at Kilauea from Monday night into Tuesday morning as the light from the volcano and its almost two-dozen fissures beamed through the clouds.

Lava destroyed a building near the plant late Monday, bringing the total number of structures overtaken in the past several weeks to almost 50, including dozens of homes.

An explosion reported Thursday produced an ash plume that rose up to 10,000 feet and "carried slightly more ash" than other recent ones, the USGS said.

Although the Kīlauea eruption did not itself cause any injuries, and mainly produced volcanic gas, its after-effects have been risky. The state officials are distributing free masks to protect against ash, but not gases or vapors.

Underscoring the eruption's dangers, a Hawaii man was hit by a flying piece of lava over the weekend said the molten rock almost sheared his leg in half.
