Library starts summer reading off with a bang

Librarians at the Hillsboro library are busy tuning their guitars and practicing their dance moves, all in preparation for this year's summer reading theme: Libraries rock!

Readers, volunteers and incentive prizes are being sought for this year's Summer Reading Program at the Twentynine Palms Branch Library, Adobe Road and Veterans Way. Participants can sign up and track the amount read either by minute for children and teens or pages for adults.

The Vermilion Parish Library will be hosting almost 50 programs to keep children active and reading throughout the summer.

The summer reading program "Reading Takes You Everywhere" will run from June 1 through July 31. Sign up to register (link in flyer attached) for the Program at Torii Library starting June 17th and record your minutes for a chance to win some great prizes! On June 9, the real fun begins with an after-hours party held exclusively in the program's honor. "A small prize is chosen, and another reading log is given to be completed". Children too young to read can also participate by listening to their parents read.

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program is always open at Allerton Public Library District.

She said research shows that children who don't read during the summer months get lower test scores compared to those who did.

As the book asks kids to say "aah", or pat their heads, or yell "underpants", author John Kane weaves all of these points of engagement into an excellent punchline. A calendar of events is listed at the library's website at www.gilibrary.org.

The library will also host a Water Babies program at 11 a.m.

Each session includes reading, snacks, and crafts and is open to all ages (with special sessions for toddler and preschool age children). 809 readers registered and a total of 40,609 books were read by them.

"The library is so community oriented, and they do a lot for children", said Ashley Knuffman, the children's mother.

"When I'm looking around for things for me to do I'm looking around at other libraries first", House said.

She explained that island families would travel and forget their children's paper log at home.

River Forest's program kicks off with a carnival-themed party, with popcorn and a bounce house, beginning at 3 p.m. June 8. Library story times help to encourage emergent literacy skills through pre-reading experiences for preschoolers.

- June 5 at 3 p.m.: Make a rainstick, build a tambourine and decorate a maraca shaker - then make some noise.
