Uber Shutting Self-Driving Car Operations In Arizona Following Fatal Crash

Uber ends Arizona driverless car programme

Uber began testing its first self-driving cars in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2016, gradually expanding to other places, including Arizona, San Francisco, California and Toronto.

That includes an incident with an Uber self-driving auto that hit a pedestrian in Arizona in March. A safety operator behind the wheel appeared to be looking down, and not at the road, moments before the crash, according to video from inside the auto released by police.

While some reports last fall suggested Khosrowshahi was thinking twice about pursuing proprietary self-driving tech, he has since recommitted despite a protracted and costly lawsuit from self-driving rival Waymo, the Google autonomous auto project that has been testing since 2009 and has an expansive program in Arizona.

In talks with company officials, I and the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure additionally required conditions with Uber before Pittsburgh would agree to testing.

"We're committed to self-driving technology, and we look forward to returning to public roads in the near future", an Uber spokesperson told the AI & IoT Daily.

The decision to pull out of Arizona will affect about 300 of the company's employees in the state.

The incident brought attention to Uber's self-driving technology, and whether it's good enough for public roads. Uber has no plans to stop offering its regular, human-operated service in Arizona.

About 200 Uber employees in Arizona-many of them safety drivers-will lose their jobs, the Arizona Republic reports.

Pittsburgh, San Francisco testing will resume soon.

Pittsburgh was Uber's first city for autonomous auto testing, launched in 2016. Ducey took the state's first self-driving Uber ride in February 2017, and added the line that "California may not want you, but Arizona does".

The ride-hailing company said Wednesday that it will pull out of the state and that all its almost 300 test drivers there will be terminated. Indeed it was reported that the car's settings might have left it assuming it could safely drive through Herzberg, rather than needing to brake or swerve to avoid her.

The crash is still being investigated by the Tempe police and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Being close to those engineering hubs wasn't such a priority for Uber when the company set up shop in Arizona, of course. The suspension includes Pittsburgh, but Uber stated in a news release that it's eyeing a return to Pittsburgh streets.

Peduto said he and the head of the city's Department of Mobility and Infrastructure told Uber its cars would be limited to 25 miles per hour within the city, no matter the posted speed limit.

Waymo, a subset of Google, is still testing autonomous vehicles in Arizona.
