Seven months after multiple reports revealed allegations of rape, sexual assault and harassment against the former movie producer, Weinstein turned himself in to the New York Police Department early Friday morning.

Disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein was arraigned in a NY court Friday, charged with rape and a criminal sex act on two women, almost eight months after his career imploded in a blaze of accusations that triggered the #MeToo movement.

Shortly before a grim-faced Weinstein appeared before the judge to face charges against two women, in a momentous day for the more than 70 who have accused him.

Speaking to the New Yorker on Thursday, Evans confirmed she was pressing charges, "They said that if I do nothing, Harvey would walk".

Law enforcement sources tell us, the U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of NY is looking to see if Weinstein violated the Mann Act.

More than 100 women have since accused Weinstein of crimes ranging from sexual harassment to assault and rape going back 40 years.

Brafman said Weinstein intends to plead "not guilty", but also said he will continue pressing the NY prosecutor "to dissuade them from proceeding" with the investigation - a possibility rarely available to poorer defendants.

He carried thick books under his right arm, including what appeared to be biographies of the Broadway musical duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and Elia Kazan, the director of such classic Hollywood films as On the Waterfront and A Streetcar Named Desire.

A jury would not believe the women, Brafman said, "assuming we get 12 fair people who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case". The D.A.'s office has said that it will continue to investigate other allegations.

"I can say this, the man who pinned me down had handcuffs on him today". "We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorized by his vast network of complicity", she wrote.

He denies the charges against him, and his high-powered lawyer has already said he will plead not guilty.

His lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, said Friday that he would fight to get the charges dismissed. "Mr. Weinstein obviously can't speak to anonymous allegations, but with respect to any women who have made allegations on the record, Mr. Weinstein believes that all of these relationships were consensual".

"These crimes are serious, sexual crimes that are being prosecuted against him". Models and actresses in Hollywood now say they had told their agents about Weinstein's behavior.

Weinstein was released on $1-million bail, with constant electronic monitoring and a ban on travelling beyond NY and CT. "Nothing about today's proceeding changes Mr. Weinstein's position".

Mr Weinstein was sacked previous year from his production firm, the Weinstein Company, which later filed for bankruptcy.

Since October 2017, more than 90 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct. Argento and McGowan accused Harvey Weinstein of rape a year ago and have been at the forefront of the crusade for justice against him. Creative Artists Agency, a major talent firm, has since said in a statement, "We apologize to any person the agency let down".
