Fiat Chrysler Is Recalling 4.8 Million Vehicles Over Cruise Control Flaw

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is warning owners of 4.8 million vehicles in the USA not to use cruise control, after discovering a flaw that could leave drivers unable to deactivate it.

FCA will be notifying customers next week and the company recommends that owners don't use the cruise control system until their vehicle has been equipped with updated software to correct the problem.

The models include the popular Ram pickup trucks of all sizes, the Jeep Cherokee and the Chrysler Pacifica minivan. Models in other countries also are affected.

Fiat Chrysler says the condition can occur if the cruise control accelerates at the same time an electrical short-circuit happens. Shifting into park would cancel the cruise, but tapping the brakes or turning off the cruise control button won't work.

Fiat Chrysler said drivers could still stop their auto by continuously putting on the brakes or by shifting into neutral gear and braking.

That acceleration can cause a short circuit, which causes the vehicle to be locked in cruise control.

If you find yourself in this situation, "don't panic, and stop your vehicle as you normally would", said Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports director of auto testing.

It was separately fined $70 million by US regulators in 2015 for failing to report vehicle crash deaths and injuries since 2003.

NHTSA said drivers could overpower the system by forcefully applying the brakes until the vehicle stopped. After the testing uncovered the trouble, FCA said it reviewed consumer complaints and found one that may be related. Most of the vehicles being recalled cover 2014-2018 model years. That happened in a 2017 Dodge Journey, which had been supplied as a rental vehicle. A recall is underway for all of the vehicles, which span FCA's Dodge, Jeep, Chrysler, and Ram lines, and include sedans, SUVs, and pickups. We urge customers to follow the instructions on their recall notices'.

The company's US shares extended their decline in early trading, falling as much as 3.9 percent, and were down 2.5 percent as of 9:25 a.m.in NY.
