WHO warns against outbreak of Nipah virus

An all-party meeting will be held on May 25.

At least 11 people have died in the southern Indian state of Kerala after they contracted a rare virus carried by bats, sparking concerns the deadly outbreak could spread.

Ten people have lost their lives to Nipah in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts so far and 19 are undergoing treatment in various hospitals, including one in Waynad.

The government also made a decision to give Rs 5 lakh each to the next of kin of the nine others who have lost their lives to Nipah.

Mr Choubey said hospitals in public and private sectors have been provided with personal protective equipment and appropriate steps to contain this virus have been taken.

The deaths in Kerala is the third instance in India's history of a Nipah virus outbreak, the first two times being in West Bengal's Siliguri in 2001 and Nadia in 2007. A central team has been sent to the district to help the state administration.

"I am not very anxious about my family back there as the state medical department is working very efficiently and we hope that the virus will be contained soon", he adds.

Nipah was first identified in 1998 after pig farmers were infected in the village of Kampung Sungai Nipah, in Malaysia. On this occasion, pigs were the intermediate hosts. Before you hit the panic button, we roped in Dr Tripti Gilada, consulting physician at Unison Medicare & Research Centre in Mumbai, which specialises in infectious diseases. Treatment for human cases is management treatment along with intensive supportive care.

For those unversed, Nipah virus, spread by fruit bats, causes communicable disease and is fatal for both animals and humans.

Other neurological symptoms can result in high fever, severe headaches, or seizures.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), these signs and symptoms can progress to coma within 24-48 hours.

The incubation period (interval from infection to the onset of symptoms) is believed to range between from 4-14 days. The virus is usually transmitted through contact with saliva or excreta of infected bats - by eating contaminated fruit, for one - and can spread from one person to another through contact and exchange of body fluids.

"India is witnessing a rapid urbanization and animals and birds including bats are losing their natural habitats. Specialized team at our strong network of laboratories are trying to find out the causes of outbreak", A.C. Dhariwal of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme told the media.
