TransLink suspends Morgan Freeman announcements due to sexual harassment allegations

Morgan Freeman’s voice pulled from Vancouver-area transit amid sexual-harassment allegations

Following reports that several women have accused Morgan Freeman of inappropriate behaviour and harassment, Vancouver's TransLink announced that it would be suspending announcements using the actor's voice.

TransLink's new public transit ad campaign featured the American actor's distinctive voice reading out announcements as part of a Visa ad campaign on trains and had only just started this week. "We will be in touch with VISA to discuss further", TransLink said via email.

CNN reported speaking with eight people who said Freeman harassed or behaved inappropriately toward them.

United States broadcaster CNN revealed 16 women who alleged the actor subjected them to unwanted touching, inappropriate comments about their bodies and attempting to lift their skirts on film sets.

Another woman who was a senior production staffer has said that Morgan exhibited the same kind of behavior on the set of the film Now You See Me.

In the Friday evening statement the Dark Knight actor characterizes himself as "someone who feels a need to try to make women-and men-feel appreciated and at ease around me" and therefore attempted to make lighthearted jokes that did not telegraph as intended.

The article makes the point that while numerous men outed by the Me Too movement - Harvey Weinstein in particular - engaged in predatory behaviour behind closed doors, the Freeman allegations spotlight another systemic problem in the entertainment industry: public harassment.

As the controversy unfolded Thursday, Vancouver-raised comedian Seth Rogen offered to lend his voice to local transit. She clarifies the Freeman announcements were part of a Visa ad campaign, meaning his future participation in the campaign will ultimately be a question for the company to answer. SAG-AFTRA, which presented him with its lifetime achievement honor this year at the SAG Awards, said it was reviewing possible "corrective actions".

"Any accused person has the right to due process, but it is our starting point to believe the courageous voices who come forward to report incidents of harassment", a union representative told the website.

Representatives for TransLink and Visa didn't respond to Newsweek's initial request for comment.
