Florida panhandle braces as storm Alberto gains new strength

Alberto was located about 330 miles south of Apalachicola Florida early Sunday morning

Alberto was located about 330 miles south of Apalachicola Florida early Sunday morning

According to the National Hurricane Center, Alberto is expected to become a subtropical depression Monday night or early Tuesday.

The center said a tropical storm warning is in effect from the Suwannee River in Florida to the Mississippi-Alabama state line. A storm surge watch has been posted from the river to Mexico Beach, Florida.

We will have to watch the far eastern side of Alabama today once we get a little heating and the atmosphere destabilizes because storms that form could produce strong wind gusts or even spin up tornadoes.

Forecasters say heavy rains from Subtropical Storm Alberto could cause flooding across most of SC.

Subtropical storm Alberto continued to strengthen slowly as it made its way toward the Gulf Coast on Sunday.

Alberto is expected to drop 2 to 6 inches of rain through Thursday across much of the Southeast, with 12 inches possible in isolated areas.

Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid 80s during the day and the mid 70s at night this week and the wind should be less than 15 miles per hour but as low as 7 miles per hour on Wednesday.

Alabama's largest electrical utility says about 20,000 homes and businesses are without power as Alberto moves through the state.

Although it will be drier rain-wise, the humidity will be inching upward, which means heat indices will climb to near 100 degrees Tuesday afternoon.

"Most of the tropical storms die out itself then it actually turns into a low pressure system", Mott said.

Mark Bowen, Bay County Emergency management director, said at a Sunday afternoon news conference that the concern isn't with storm surge due to the timing of landfall and the tides. It is showing signs of transitioning to something more tropical as deeper convection has developed near the center.

Because of the predicted landfall area, Lee County and surrounding areas could potentially experience "tropical weak tornadoes", Allen said, because of the county's location in relation to the storm.

At 8 AM the storm was SW of Tampa and moving North at 15 miles per hour and is forecasted to strengthen over the next few days. Meanwhile, areas along the Florida Panhandle endured tropical storm conditions as thunderstorms and high winds from the northern bands of the storm reached inland. But this past month saw four days that each had close to an inch of rain, Krein said.

"I'm doing this because every time we have a hard rain, it floods at my house", resident Tommy Whitlock told the Associated Press.
