Those who wear glasses are smarter

The study found that the genetic signature associated with increased cognitive function was also associated with better cardiovascular and mental health

Although the study was unable to explain why the link existed, it also suggested that those with a higher cognitive ability had genes linked to better cardiovascular health.

The researchers analysed data from more than 300,000 people who'd taken a variety of problem-solving tests created to evaluate their cognitive skills.

"This study, the largest genetic study of cognitive function, has identified many genetic differences that contribute to the heritability of thinking skills", said Gail Davies from University of Edinburgh in the UK.

Among the findings, the research showed the respondents to be the most intelligent were wearers of glasses.

A team led by the University of Edinburgh found significant small signals from 148 genomic regions that were related to having better cognitive function, 58 of which had not been reported before.

The study is the largest of its kind ever conducted, according to The Guardian, and also found negative correlations between cognitive function and a number of other health problems, including angina, lung cancer and depression.

"Less than a decade ago we were searching for genes related to intelligence with about 3,000 participants, and we found nearly nothing". "One thing we know from these results is that good thinking skills are a part of good health overall". She also agreed with the authors that there is no standard way to measure cognitive function, and that the results aren't proof of a causal association between a person's physical health and intelligence.

Professor Ian Deary said, "Research into the connection between genetics and intelligence has come a long way in recent years".

Further more, in that study of 3,000 Americans, 40 per cent of respondents thought eyeglasses made someone smarter, while 39 per cent thought it made someone look sophisticated.
