Former quarterback Oliver Luck to become XFL commissioner

Oliver Luck says XFL players will stand for the national anthem

A source familiar with Luck's decision making told Yahoo Sports that Luck's move is based primarily on the "special opportunity" of being involved with the launch of a professional football league. The new XFL kicks off in early 2020 and will deliver a fan-centric, innovative experience, including fast-paced games and a family-friendly environment, complemented by cross-platform viewing options and real-time fan engagement.

Luck left West Virginia as AD in 2014 to become the NCAA's executive vice president of regulatory affairs.

Luck played quarterback at West Virginia and earned his law degree at the University of Texas during National Football League offseasons while playing for the Houston Oilers.

He will now relocate from Indianapolis to the XFL's headquarters in CT as he prepares for the league's launch in 2020. The XFL confirmed the news moments later on its Twitter account.

Weekly Standard reporter Andrew Egger weighs in on the new policy.

McMahon announced the hire Tuesday, four months after unveiling plans to relaunch the XFL, which folded in 2001 after its only season.

"Oliver Luck has been a key member of my leadership team and he has done a superb job at the NCAA over the last three years", NCAA President Mark Emmert said in a statement. "Oliver's values and leadership skills helped keep the Association focused on supporting student-athletes".

The XFL is backed by WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, who said the league would have a 10-week regular season starting in January 2020. There's a reported $100 million outlay by McMahon to start the XFL.

"Each contest will be a high profile event with tens of thousands of fans, featuring innovative elements that bring them closer to the players and the game they love".
