Chuck Schumer Rips Trump Amid Reported ZTE Deal

It ceased operations nearly immediately after the ruling came into effect.

The Commerce Department denial order prevented ZTE from utilizing key technology from USA suppliers like Qualcomm and and Broadcom, making it hard to produce smartphones or telecommunications equipment. Here we are, though.

According to a report from Reuters, ZTE has reached a deal with usa authorities that would lift a ban that prevents it from buying parts from U.S. suppliers.

"The preliminary deal includes a $1 billion fine against ZTE plus $400 million in escrow to cover any future violations, sources said, adding that the terms were in line with Reuters reporting on the us demands on Friday. It would also allow unfettered site visits to verify that United States components are being used as claimed by the company".

Or maybe this will be blocked? This means that they could be fined up to $1.7 billion in total.

As part of the deal, sources said, ZTE promised to replace its board and executive team in 30 days.

That fine was ordered after the company was found to have sold phones to Iran and North Korea, which are the subject of US trade embargoes.

The U.S. government is also reportedly planning to include the previous $361 million fine that ZTE paid as part of an earlier agreement in 2017 in this new settlement. ZTE declined to comment. ZTE's failure to comply with these terms triggered the suspended denial order that prohibits American companies from doing business with the Shenzhen-based company, plunging it into crisis.

The terms, they said, were in line with Reuters reporting on the US demands Friday. The agreement is also expected to call for other concessions from ZTE, including new board members and increased USA oversight of its business. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told Reuters he thought Congress should immediately take action to try to block the deal. The Chinese company said in June 2017 that it had fulfilled its promise, but later admitted in March 2018 that while it had fired the four senior employees, it had not disciplined or reduced bonuses for the 35 others. It's important to note that this deal is not confirmed, with Commerce Department spokesman James Rockas saying that "no definitive agreement has been signed by both parties".

Shares of Acacia and Oclaro extended their gains on Tuesday in heavy trading after news of the preliminary deal, ending up 1.7 percent and 1.8 percent, respectively.
