Bill Clinton still doesn’t get it

Clinton says he has not spoken to her and does not owe her an apology.

Lewinsky, now 44, has not specifically commented on Clinton's remarks, but did repost her March Vanity Fair column about the tryst. Full 1 pm hour. I messed up and I own that,"saying no one else is to blame for that botched interview, "including that young man aggressively saying I did not apologize".

Former President Bill Clinton made "false allegations" about his interview on Today show, NBC's morning show happily scolded this morning.

He seemed surprised at the questions, and then bristled at them, because he may have been under the impression that the interview would be entirely benign and focused exclusively on this new thriller he has co-authored with James Patterson. In that interview, Clinton said, of his sit-down with Melvin, "I got mad... and should have remembered that man is young enough to be my son".

"Now, at 44, I'm beginning (just beginning) to consider the implications of power differentials that were so vast between a president and a White House intern", she wrote.

More broadly, he said he is supportive of the #MeToo movement writ large even as he expressed skepticism over certain aspects of it.

He added: "But the important thing is that was a very painful thing that happened 20 years ago and I apologized to my family, to Monica Lewinsky and her family, to the American people".

Clinton added how everyone is still "getting better".

Detecting some of that Bill Clinton fancy footwork that so often earned him political success and the ire of his enemies, Colbert pressed the former President on his apparent feeling that the Lewinsky business was settled in the past and not worthy of re-examination under this new period of enlightenment and reckoning about sexual harrassment.

Clinton said he was mad at himself after watching the NBC interview and that he meant his apology to Lewinsky back then and still does today. And I've tried to do a good job since then, and with my life and with my work. She did, however, tweet thanks after hearing that Colbert's other late-night guest, Tig Notaro, praised Lewinsky as an "exceptional human being".

"It seemed tone-deaf to me", Colbert continued, "because you seemed offended to be asked about this thing when, in all due respect sir, your behavior was the most famous example of a powerful man sexually misbehaving in the workplace of my lifetime. You know, this is the woman that goes through it every day, every day from both sides - left and right".

"I think the tape speaks for itself".

All the recent comments came amid Clinton's book tour with author James Patterson, who co-authored "The President Is Missing" with the former president.

Clinton said he was right not to resign.
