Capitals rout Vegas to go up 3-1 in Stanley Cup Final

Capitals beat Golden Knights in Game 3 to grab 2-1 lead in Stanley Cup final

Already trailing the best-of-seven Stanley Cup Final 2-1, the Golden Knights are in desperate need of a win tonight at Capital One Arena against Washington.

The Capitals took the lead in the series after Saturday's 3-1 win in Washington.

Game 5 is Thursday night in Las Vegas.

Jones on the difference between the two teams in the first period: "The difference is confidence and lacking confidence".

Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby had a shutout into the third period for the third consecutive home game.

So we know that Washington has been quite effective - particularly in the last two games - at limiting those "Grade A" chances by Vegas.

The Golden Knights' inability to possess the puck and dictate play with their five-man forecheck has largely left Fleury on and island, where Ovechkin, center Evgeny Kuznetsov and the rest of the Capitals' playmakers have made charge after charge at his crease.

"I've never been there", Kuznetsov said after just the fourth four-assist game in Cup Final history. He finished with 28 saves. It's hard to see the Golden Knights beating the Caps three times in a row, but crazier things have happened.

The Washington Capitals got three goals in the first period of Game 4 and are spending much of the second period making sure the lead stands up against the Vegas Golden Knights. I shot it off the post on the far side.

The Capitals have not trailed at any point since their Game 1 loss. He tried not to smile too much at the thought of being one win away from the Stanley Cup.

In the second period, a clearly frustrated Neal asked one of the Golden Knights' equipment managers to rub and kiss his stick for good luck. He knows all about the plastic rats in Florida, the octopi in Detroit and the catfish in Nashville.

Merritt bought a crab from a local restaurant before Game 3 and brought it into the arena with hope. Monday's Game 4 could put him on the threshold of sheer ecstasy.

Alex Ovechkin: Ovie is the only player to record at least one point in every game of the Stanley Cup final. "They came back. They got some quick goals". Humboldt Broncos forward Kaleb Dahlgren was also on hand.

Dahlgren got a nice reaction from the crowd and then a roar when he lifted up his yellow Humboldt jersey to reveal a red Capitals jersey. "A lot of guys make mistakes in a hockey game ⅛and⅜ they don't end up in the back of the net".

Boucher on how Vegas has defended Washington's power-play: "The one thing Vegas has done a good job at is taking away Ovechkin and also taking away the slot guy in T.J. Oshie".

Said Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury: "The puck just did not want to come in for us". Not long after that, Smith-Pelly scored from a tough angle on the left side after a weird bounce.

Another barrage of VGK chances opened the 2nd, and once again, the posts and Holtby kept them all from getting to the net. But, Washington headed into the first intermission with a commanding 3-0 lead.

That means Vegas must use simpler plays, not try to make that extra pass on a possession, and just start firing the puck at the net more. When the Capitals took a lead in Game 3, they went into their now-patented scheme. Just not Vegas' night and not a good trip to Washington.

The atmosphere was electric before the game.

The fans waved white glow sticks and waved towels before the national anthem. Vegas' average shot distance in Game 3 was about 42 feet. On the morning of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning, it was Trotz the players chose to do the "hot lap" - a full-speed lap around the rink - before their morning skate.

Fall Out Boy is playing the pregame concert at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, two days after Sting and Shaggy. The cheapest tickets available on Ticket IQ and StubHub are more than $1,000 each.

Accustomed to defying logic over the course of their magical first season, the Knights responded with four straight victories to dispose of the heavily favoured Jets in five games.

Vegas has scored three goals against the Washington Capitals in the past two games and fallen behind 2-1 in a series for the first time in the playoffs. It has put the pressure squarely on the shoulders of Vegas and head coach Gerard Gallant, who is already publicizing possible adjustments and lineup changes in advance of Game 4. This has been the most unpredictable playoffs if not season in National Hockey League history and i can easily say from a kid who has grown up around the game that this will go down as one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons in the history of the National Hockey League.
