A stunning strike from Marcus Rashford and a Danny Welbeck header sparked a confident-looking England to a 2-0 win over Costa Rica in their pre-World Cup friendly at Elland Road.

Rashford had a disappointing end to United's Premier League season, and Southgate felt he may have been trying too hard.

England controlled the encounter from that point on and wrapped up victory with 14 minutes to go when Welbeck met Dele Alli's cross with a diving header into the empty net.

Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are all but assured of a place in the first match of the tournament and on this form there is every chance that Marcus Rashford will be joining them in what could be a potent trio for the Three Lions.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made his senior England debut as Gareth Southgate's side beat Costa Rica 2-0 in their final outing before the World Cup.

Harry Maguire and Jamie Vardy are given the chance to impress as England build towards their World Cup Group G opener against Tunisia in Volgograd a week on Monday.

"Henderson can play as a number eight, so that gives you an option, Dier can play as a they both have another way into the team. We need that competition but I'm delighted with our preparation and I feel positive about our platform leading into the tournament", he said.

Pope will be England's third-choice shot-stopper at the tournament behind Jordan Pickford and Butland, but he would still relish making his senior worldwide debut.

It looked like another plodding friendly between England and Costa Rica as the Three Lions get their final outing before heading off to Russian Federation.

Costa Rica face tournament favourites Brazil as well as Serbia and Switzerland in Group E, and will need to show far more ambition once they get to Russian Federation if they are to replicate their heroics of four years ago.

It was Costa Rica's only threat in a dominant first-half display by England.
