Trump floats possibility of pardoning Muhammad Ali

President Trump said Friday that he's thinking about pardoning deceased boxing legend and civil rights activist Muhammad Ali.

Ali was convicted in 1967 of draft evasion during the Vietnam War. He then floated Ali's name, despite the fact that the late boxer's conviction for draft evasion was overturned almost 50 years ago. The US supreme court overturned the conviction of Muhammad Ali in a unanimous decision in 1971. "And he wasn't very popular then", Trump said.

Ali regained the boxing title in 1974. That law made it illegal to transport women across state lines for "immoral" purposes. Wrongful convictions have been erased with presidential pardons, but there is technically no longer a conviction on Ali's record. Johnson was convicted in 1913 by an all-white jury of violating the Mann Act for traveling with his white girlfriend.

Ali died in June 2016 at age 74. Of the 3,000 names, many of those names really have been treated unfairly. "We're looking at them", Trump said.

President Donald Trump on Friday told reporters that he has every intention of using his pardoning power to its fullest extent, suggesting again that he has the power to pardon himself - "But I'll never have to do it".

He did not offer any other names, but said in response to a reporter's question that O.J. Simpson wasn't on the list.

Trump has also previously floated pardoning Martha Stewart and a commuting the 14-year sentence for ex-Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Johnson spent 21 years in prison on those charges. Kim Kardashian visited the White House last week to ask Trump to consider pardoning Johnson. There's a slight problem with pardoning Ali though: His conviction was already thrown out.
