In the other remaining quarterfinal, which will continue Thursday at Court Suzanne Lenglen, No. 3 Marin Cilic and No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro were at 5-all in a first-set tiebreaker when the play-ending shower came. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match Nadal won in four sets. Here with Federer. After 10 years, they are [still] fighting to win these kind of tournaments. And so it proved.

The fifth seed, who stunned Roger Federer to win the 2009 US Open at the age of 20, said he never imagined that the likes of the 20-time Grand Slam champion and Nadal would still be standing in his path at major tournaments nearly a decade later.

"It's tough to speak now", said an emotional Del Potro.

Halep has won five of her past nine matches against the 12th-seeded Kerber, including their most recent encounter in the Australian Open semifinals when she saved two match points.

"It's a challenge that every player wants to have", he said. "Second thing, if you don't feel the pressure, it's because you don't love the sport", said Nadal, who has never failed to win the title in Paris after reaching the semi-finals. In the victory, Del Potro won 79 percent of his first serve points and 54 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro and Cilic alternated games in the fourth set before del Potro broke his opponent in the 11th game and served out the match. Halep saved two match points to win that one.

He added: "It was a very hard match against a good friend and good player".

"Mentally things can be better or worse, but the determination I had yesterday, it created great impact in the result and in the game". Even though Nadal hasn't been playing his best all tournament he's still getting through; I expect it to be no different against Del Potro.

Stephens battled out to a 3-1 lead in the first set, but Keys wouldn't go away easily. Last year, he took the trophy without dropping a set.

But he returned 30-15 up and serving to level the match after fighting back from a break down in the second set between rain delays the previous evening. I couldn't find the right person.

Del Potro dipped at the start of the third and Cilic had points for a double break but the burly Argentine, roared on by chants of "Delpo Delpo" recovered his drive to hit back from 0-2 and take the third set.

Rafael Nadal credited a rain delay with giving him more clarity after he fought back from a set down to defeat Diego Schwartzman and reach the semi-finals of the French Open.

- Is playing in the semi-finals for the first time since 2009 after years of injury woe.
