The communiqué had been agreed by all countries participating in the G7 in spite of tensions over USA tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, the BBC reported, with Trudeau commenting that all countries had signed on to the statement prior to Trump's comments.

'The prime minister said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the president, ' Trudeau's office said in a statement released on Twitter, which added Trudeau remained focused on what was accomplished at the two-day summit in Quebec.

In a second tweet, Trump said that Trudeau acted "meek and mild" during the G7 summit and that the USA tariffs were in response to Canada's 270% tariff on dairy products.

The President warned Canada and Europe to back off their threats to hit back with retaliatory trade measures on July 1 if the US does not lift the steel and aluminum levies.

Trump created a distraction when he walked in late for Saturday's breakfast meeting during the Group of Seven summit of leading industrialized nations being held in Quebec.

As Trump heads to Canada for this week's meeting of the G7 Group of Nations, the general consensus is that this is more like a G6 plus one- with the U.S. under Trump the odd country out.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

Larry Kudlow said Mr. Trump negotiated in good faith with fellow global powers in Quebec. "So we are going in with a really positive spirit". The president says at the Group of Seven summit: "If they retaliate, they're making a mistake".

White House officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the characterisations by these officials of Trump's remarks or attention to the presentations.

Trump's tardiness has apparently been put down to the president being delayed by a separate G7 meeting with his own staff, reported MSNBC.

As he exited the world summit, Trump had delivered a stark warning to America's trading partners not to counter his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

"Very dishonest & weak", Trump said, adding that recently imposed United States tariffs on imports of Canadian steel and aluminium were in response to similar measures imposed on American dairy products by Canada.

"Very dishonest and weak".

The top German diplomat specifically referenced Trump's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris climate accords, and the imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum as unfathomable measures to take against his nation's closest allies.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May stood with Trudeau on the issue of trade.

This followed two days of feuding with some of his closest allies - one French official told reporters of a "very unusual" and "bitter" exchange Friday between world leaders, describing the United States president making his case in a "Rant". Bannon said China is "now on notice that Trump will not back down from even allies" complaints in his goal of "America First'". "Angela and Emmanuel and Justin, I would say the relationshiip is a 10", he said.
