Kitty Hawk’s Flyer Is Ready to Take You to the Skies

Don't expect the current model to do more than fly over water - its designers want to do a lot more testing and build a parachute into the vehicle first, but they believe it could reach speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

In many ways, it operates a lot like a drone you can pilot from on top of it - it's powered by 10 motor propellers that are self-stabilized, and is meant to be simple and easy to control.

However, according to her colleagues, before the start of the state Kitty Hawk gave Rachel a 90-minute course on piloting the Flyer.

Kitty Hawk promises to get people in the air in less than an hour because of the Flyer's simple control system, which comprises just two joysticks. Those interested in buying one for themselves can apply to preorder through its website.

Larry Page's flying vehicle project Kitty Hawk was successfully tested.

Flyer was developed by Todd Reichert, Kitty Hawk's Director of Engineering, the same Canadian engineering talent behind world record-setting and human-powered vehicles like the AeroVelo Snowbird ornithopter, Atlas helicopter and Eta speed bike. After just an hour's training, Crane was able to fly the machine at a speed of 6 mph and a height of 10 feet above the water. The zero-emissions Flyer is completely powered by electricity, and its propellers all operate independently, meaning that if there is a problem with one or more propellers, the entire vehicle won't come crashing down.

Weighing just 250lb, the vehicle is operated by two control sticks - one controlling the altitude and one controlling its direction. After a first successful test flight of a flying vehicle being accomplished recently, we can perhaps soon do what we would right now kill for - fly over traffic. The company states that in the future, with some improvements, the Flyer could eventually reach 100mph.

"The No. 1 most important thing other than safety for us is societal acceptance", he told CNN.

'Will people be willing to fly these devices or live next to a device like this that flies in your neighborhood?,' Thrun said. "That's why opened this training facility in Lake Las Vegas - we're here to learn from you, to see your reaction".
