It's recommended, only due to their most recent project in artificial intelligence: Norman, the AI who's also a psychopath.

Naturally, with this kind of data set as reference material, Norman's image captions are particularly gruesome. The goal was to prove that teaching AI to learn in this way would influence its later work and behaviour, highlighting how algorithms themselves aren't biased, but it's the data fed into them that can be.

However, after plundering the depths of Reddit and a select subreddit dedicated to graphic content brimming with images of death and destruction, Norman's datasets are far from what a standard AI would be exposed to.

The world is definitely going towards the AI concept we've seen in movies. Norman was trained to perform image captioning, a deep learning method used to generate a description of an image.

Norman is an intentionally-biased neural network created to caption images.

The Rorschach test is a standard psychiatric technique which involves showing patients a series of inkblots in order to gauge their underlying thought patterns. Norman' responses were then compared with responses with a standard image captioning AI on Rorschach inkblots. In the first inkblot, where the standard AI sees a "group of birds sitting on top of a tree branch", the psychopath AI sees that "a man is electrocuted and catches to death".

You can see what Norman AI sees, here. In inkblot #8, the regular AI sees "a person holding an umbrella in the air", while the psychopath AI sees "man is shot dead in front of his screaming wife".

Where the control AI identified a couple companionably standing together in harmony, Norman described a pregnant woman falling to her death.

If there is ever a need to prove just how insane and abusive the internet has made people, a recent artificial intelligence by MIT can be Exhibit A. Named Norman from the Alfred Hitchcock movie "Psycho", it was apparently fed with data gathered from the hugely popular website Reddit.

Microsoft's infamous Tay algorithm, launched in 2016, was meant to be a chat robot that could carry out autonomous conversations with Twitter users.
