Exoplanet discovered by Indian scientists 600 light years away

They have detected a sub-Saturn or sub-Neptune like planet revolving around a Sun-like star.

The scientists found that the host star is about 600 light years away from Earth and the planet goes around the star in 19.5 days.

"Although the atmospheric temperature of red dwarf stars, around which these planets revolve, is 3,450 and 3,800 Kelvin respectively, nearly half the temperature of our Sun", the researchers said.

The exoplanet is reported to be smaller than Saturn but bigger than Neptune.

Otherwise, the planets are probably inhospitable: they are very close to their star and therefore very warm.

Indigenously designed "PRL Advance Radial-velocity Abu-Sky Search" (PARAS) spectrograph integrated with a 1.2m telescope, was used to measure the mass of the planet, which facilitated the discovery of the planet.

Artistic simulation of a planetary system composed by three rocky planets wiht the same size of the Earth. "Very few such spectrographs exist around the world (mostly in the U.S. and in the Europe) that can do such precise measurements", the space agency said on its website late on June 8. "It's closer to Neptune", he said. The mass of the planet has been estimated to be around 27 times the mass of the Earth whereas its radius is estimated to be 6 times that of the Earth. By measuring the amount of light blocked by the planet body, we can measure the diameter or size of the planet.

The newly discovered planet adds to the list of exoplanets with masses between 10 and 70 MEarth and radii between 4 and 8 REarth.

It is being reported that when it comes to the temperature of the three planets that are the same size as Earth, this is where the similarity ends as they would nearly certainly have surface temperatures that are much higher than our planet owing to the intense radiation given by the red dwarf star they orbit. Such a high temperature might make it uninhabitable for living creatures. The PRL scientists observed the target for around 420 days for probing the nature of the system using the PARAS spectrograph. This is what they have so far discovered.

Dr. Murthy said, "The work done by Dr. Chakraborty and his collaborators is important in characterising the nature of the exoplanet and they were able to show that the candidate is a close to Saturn-size planet orbiting near its star".
