Mr Kim and Mr Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday for what will be the first-ever summit, set to held on Tuesday (June 12), between a leader of North Korea and a sitting USA president.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un with Singapore's prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, at the Istana in Singapore on Sunday.

Back in North Korea, the running bodyguards always accompany any state vehicle Kim is travelling on and the same was evident during the inter-Korean summit.

Authorities have beefed up security around the hotels where Trump and Kim (Saint Regis) will be staying in central Singapore.

Trump took office having been warned by President Obama that North Korea would be his gravest challenge, and tensions boiled nearly immediately as Pyongyang began a barrage of missile tests during Trump's first months in office.

During his preparation period, Trump continued on Monday to publicly brawl on Twitter with USA allies over trade.

Why only potentially? That's because these two world leaders are not, strictly speaking, known to be very diplomatic - that is to say that they are in no manner of speaking, known to be very diplomatic at all.

The tests culminated in November's test of an intercontinental ballistic missile that North Korea said could reach the entirety of the United States.

North and South Korea remain technically at war after the 1950-53 conflict ended in an armistice that Seoul's then leader refused to sign and divided the peninsula along the Demilitarized Zone.

The newspaper said the summit marks the start of a "changed era" for North Korea and the US.

The key players have arrived, with North Korea's Kim Jong-un touching down Sunday after his longest plane journey since taking power.

Some believe that Trump should demand complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and abandon the meeting immediately if Kim doesn't agree.

The meeting included North Korea Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choe Son-hui and US negotiators Allison Hooker, the National Security Council's director for Korea, and Randall Schriver, assistant defense secretary for Asian and Pacific security affairs.

"Chairman Kim thanked Prime Minister Lee for Singapore's hosting of the US-DPRK Summit", the document adds.

"We've got a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I just think it's going to work out very nicely", Trump said.

The summit, the first time a sitting U.S. president meets a North Korean leader, was almost called off just two weeks before the event.

With the eyes of the world following him, Trump flew into Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base aboard Air Force One on Sunday, fresh from a divisive G7 meeting in Canada with some of Washington's closest allies that further strained global trade ties.

South Korea estimates the North has 50 kilograms of plutonium, reportedly enough for around 10 bombs, and a "considerable" ability to produce uranium weapons.

Even now, many experts doubt assurances by South Korea and the USA that Kim really intends to talk about eliminating his nuclear weapons program and believe he may be bent instead on easing pressure on his impoverished state and retaining as much of his arsenal as possible.

"I am on a mission of peace and we're going to be carrying the hearts of millions of people from all", he said. Trump and Kim come from very different backgrounds and ideologies, and at 71, Trump is about twice as old as the North Korean leader.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said USA and North Korean officials would hold working-level talks on Monday.

Asked about a North Korean state media report that Trump and Kim were set to talk denuclearization and peace on the Korean peninsula, the official said the report is a hopeful indication.
