Trump says he may pardon late boxing champion Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali's former lawyer has a message for President Donald Trump, who said Friday that he is considering posthumously pardoning the boxing legend: Thanks but no thanks. "I'm thinking about Muhammed Ali", Trump told reporters on the south lawn of the White House. On Friday, he announced that he was actually considering pardoning Ali, who was convicted in 1967 for refusing to serve in the military due to religious reasons.

On Friday morning, after Trump mentioned his interest in pardoning Ali, Ali's lawyer Ron Tweel responded with some pertinent information that the president may have been missing. But because the Supreme Court already overturned Ali's conviction in 1971 - and he regained the boxing title in 1974 - some are finding Mr Trump's announcement baffling. "I'm thinking about Muhammad Ali", Trump said. "I'm thinking about that very seriously and some others", he said, referring to his presidential power to pardon those convicted of federal crimes.

He added that he was thinking about pardoning "some others", including people who "have sentences that aren't very fair".

Earlier this week, Trump commuted the sentence of Alice Marie Johnson, a woman serving a life term for nonviolent drug-related offenses, after meeting with reality television star and socialite Kim Kardashian West to discuss the case.

Trump also said he strongly opposed USA involvement in Vietnam.

"There will be more pardons", he told reporters before leaving for the G7 Summit. The Supreme Court overturned his conviction for resisting the draft in 1971.

Former world boxing champion Muhammad Ali signs for the pupils in the 1st Experimental Elementary School of Beijing on February 25, 1993 when he is invited as a guest for the Beijing International Boxing Champions Meet.

"If I thought the war was going to bring freedom and equality to 22 million of my people they wouldn't have to drafted me, I'd join tomorrow". His license to fight was also reinstated and Ali spent the next 10 years fighting professionally, cementing his reputation as one of the country's most prominent athletes. "I have an absolute right to pardon myself", he said, but doesn't need to do that because he did nothing wrong. Of the 3,000 names, many of those names really have been treated unfairly. And he even reached out to National Football League players who have protested injustices in the criminal justice system, saying they, too, can recommend cases of people who should be pardoned or released from prison.
