Dennis Rodman cries as he hails Trump-Kim summit: 'I'm so happy'

"North Korea has its own royal lineage - the Kim family - and so it is natural that Kim Yo Jong traveled to Singapore separately from her brother", Christopher Green, a North Korea researcher and Sino-NK editor, told NK News on Monday.

Another challenge is monitoring North Korea's nuclear scientists.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday.

In the run-up to Tuesday's historic face-to-face with Kim, Trump has appeared unconcerned about the implications of feting an authoritarian leader suspected of ordering the public assassination of his half-brother with a nerve agent, executing his uncle by firing squad and presiding over a notorious gulag estimated to hold 80,000 to 120,000 political prisoners.

Rodman arrived at Changi airport late on Monday amid speculation that he might even join the talks between the two leaders. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

In a September 2017 speech in front of the United Nations, President Trump referred to Kim as "Rocket Man" and threatened to "totally destroy North Korea", which earned a rare rebuke directly from Kim describing the president as a "frightened dog" and "mentally deranged US dotard".

Trump said Saturday that he believes the North Korean leader will "surprise on the upside". But it will only be the beginning of a longer process.

He added he would know within minutes whether Kim was serious about negotiating away his nuclear weapons and has threatened to politely walk out if Kim doesn't meet his expectations.

He declined, however, to reveal any details of the preliminary discussions being held Monday between US and North Korean officials.

"I'm very optimistic that we will have a successful outcome from our meetings tomorrow", he said.

The North Korean autocrat's every move will be followed by 3,000 journalists who have converged on Singapore, and by gawkers around the world, up until he shakes hands with Trump on Tuesday. Assuming that nuclear war doesn't break out.

The US doesn't recognise the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, nor do American officials have much reason to take North Korean leaders at their word, having had previous diplomatic efforts to engage scuttled.

North Korea has previously said it was willing to discuss denuclearization, but experts have expressed concern over the varying definitions of the term held by Washington and Pyongyang.

The talks - unimaginable just a few months ago - will focus on North Korea's controversial nuclear programme. Later in the day, he met with senior advisers and phoned the leaders of Japan and South Korea.

Kim is due to leave on Tuesday afternoon, a source has said.

Joseph Yun, former United States envoy for North Korea policy, alluded to that when he told a Senate hearing last week that there's a risk of "overloading the agenda" for the summit. That could generate misunderstandings and a breakdown that risks armed conflict over North Korea's nuclear weapons.
